Why Create?

Three Friends. Three Different Stories. Three Creators.

Three Friends. Three Different Stories. Three Creators.

Lately, I have been pondering on why I create. With no definite answer, I decided to explore why some of my friends create as a part of my journey to answer this foundational question.

Creating invites forgotten truth back into the atmosphere—truth about ourselves and this world, truth about the laws that bind us and the ones that set us free. Art is born in that subliminal place in our spirits where the reality of what is dances with the possibility of what could be—where the veil becomes thin and the narrative coursing through history, unmistakable. The act of creating is nothing less than pursuing, finding, and then telling the truth.

I had a college professor who used to say “creation implies intention.” In other words, a created object is meant to have meaning.

A purpose. A function. A chair is created to be sat on. A cup is created to be drank from. And a bed is meant to be slept on. That’s why these things were created.

I create to enjoy. At first glance, the things I create don’t seem to have a functional purpose. From random soundscapes on my laptop to strange sketches in my notebook. They have no concrete purpose or function, yet they give me something less tangible. Enjoyment. Whether it’s the final outcome of a project or the process in getting there, each step is towards something much more meaningful. I receive joy when I create.

So for me, I’ll put a twist on my college professors quote. For me, creation implies intentional enjoyment for the creator.

And I have a feeling my Creator feels the same way.

The act of creating is tethered to our identity as humans. If imago dei is true, and I believe it is, then we are creators at our core. It reminds us of who we are and frees us to give outward expression to the intricacies of our identity. I create because it brings meaning, authenticity and joy to my life and the lives of others. Creation is life giving and gives glory where glory is due therefore I want to be a part of that purpose.
